Lansing β€” Where the Bluffs Meet the Big River

Lansing, Iowa sits in the far northeast corner of the state, nestled between the Mississippi River and towering limestone bluffs in Allamakee County. Platted around 1851 and officially incorporated on July 1, 1867, Lansing was named by its first settler β€” a native of Lansing, Michigan β€” and quickly grew into a river boom town.

Today, with a population of 968, Lansing is one of Iowa's most scenic small towns. Main Street runs directly to the riverbank, the bluffs rise dramatically behind downtown, and the entire surrounding region is part of the remarkable Driftless Area β€” a landscape untouched by glaciers and unlike anywhere else in the Midwest.

Lansing is approximately 31 miles south of La Crosse, Wisconsin, accessible via the Great River Road (Highway 26) and Highway 9. The nearest commercial airport is La Crosse Regional Airport (LSE).

Mount Hosmer City Park

Rising 450 feet above downtown Lansing, Mount Hosmer City Park is the town's defining landmark. The 104-acre park offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views of the Mississippi River Valley found anywhere along the river.

The park is home to the LOST Trails system β€” 7 miles of hiking trails winding through bluff terrain, three scenic overlooks, a picnic pavilion, playground, restrooms, and the Mt. Hosmer Veterans Memorial Park.

Named for Harriet Hosmer, a renowned American sculptor who, in 1851 during a steamboat layover, won a footrace to the summit β€” barefoot β€” against male crewmembers at age 20. She would go on to become one of the most celebrated sculptors in America.

The Driftless Area

Lansing sits at the heart of one of the most geologically remarkable regions in North America β€” a landscape that looks and feels unlike anywhere else in the Midwest.

🌍 A Landscape Bypassed by the Ice Age

The Driftless Area covers approximately 24,000 square miles across parts of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois. During the last Ice Age, glaciers that shaped and flattened much of North America bypassed this region entirely β€” leaving the existing topography preserved and untouched.

The result is a dramatic landscape of steep bluffs, rolling hills, limestone cliffs, cold-water trout streams, spring-fed creeks, and winding waterways that differs dramatically from the flat plains of the surrounding Midwest. The Driftless Area Scenic Byway passes directly through Lansing, offering travelers access to this extraordinary natural corridor.

History of Lansing

From Diamond Jo Reynolds to the button factories, Lansing has a history as layered as the limestone bluffs it rests beneath.

1851
Lansing platted by its first settler, a native of Lansing, Michigan. That same year, 20-year-old sculptor Harriet Hosmer β€” during a steamboat layover β€” wins a barefoot footrace to the top of the 450-foot bluff against male crewmembers. The bluff is later named Mount Hosmer in her honor.
1867
Lansing officially incorporated on July 1. The city had previously served as the Allamakee County seat; county records were moved to Waukon this same year.
1870s–80s
Boom years. Farmers travel to Lansing's grain elevator and Mississippi River levee. Riverboat captains build stately homes at the foot of the bluff, within sight of one of the Mississippi's sharpest bends. Joseph "Diamond Jo" Reynolds, namesake of the famous Diamond Jo steamship line, builds his first boat here and names it for the town.
1897
The Lansing Company begins manufacturing buttons punched from mussel shells harvested from the Mississippi River. The button industry becomes so popular that local bars accept buttons as currency. The company continues making buttons today, now using plastic materials.
2025
The historic Black Hawk Bridge β€” a beloved landmark connecting Iowa and Wisconsin for over 90 years β€” is demolished using explosives on December 19, 2025 due to unsafe conditions. A replacement bridge with a design similar to the original is planned.
